What This Site Is

DockPermitGuide is an independent informational reference covering residential dock and pier permit requirements across the United States. Our goal is to give waterfront property owners a clear, plain-language starting point for understanding which agencies have jurisdiction over their dock project, what permits or exemptions apply, and what the process looks like from start to finish.

We cover all 50 states with a focus on the states where dock permitting is most complex: Florida, Tennessee (TVA reservoirs), Minnesota, Georgia, Michigan, and others. We also cover federal requirements — including U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Section 10 and Section 404 permits — which apply in all 50 states for applicable projects.

Editorial Approach

Every page on this site is researched from primary sources: official agency websites, state statutes and administrative codes, federal regulations, and publicly available agency guidance documents. We do not publish information we cannot trace to an authoritative source, and we note when rules are subject to interpretation or local variation.

We update content when we become aware of regulatory changes. However, dock permitting rules change — agencies issue new guidance, legislatures amend statutes, and fee schedules are revised. We always recommend verifying current requirements directly with the relevant agency before making any permitting decisions.
